• Charley Radbourn, pitching for the Cincinnati Reds, becomes the 4th player in major league history to win his 300th game. He accomplished the feat in just 11 years after completing 489 of the 503 games he started. He won 59 games in 1884.

• Fred McGriff of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays became the 31st player in the history of the major leagues to hit 400 career home runs.

• The Pittsburgh Penguins play the Detroit Red Wings in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, marking the latest game ever played by the Penguins. Previously, the latest game of the season was played on June 1, 1992 when the Penguins beat the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Cup.

• Lou Gehrig died of a disease that would eventually be named after him at the age of 38. The Hall of Famer was one of the greatest players to ever play the game. He finished with a .340/.447/.632 career line.

• University of Iowa football legend and Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick, while on a routine training flight during World War II, is forced to abandon his aircraft when it developed engine trouble. There was no trace of the plane or of Kinnick. His body was never recovered.
