  • The first "Ladies Day" is held at the Polo Grounds in New York as the New York Gothams (who would eventually be known as the Giants) offer free admission to women.

  • Tom Hughes tosses a no-hitter to help the Boston Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-0

  • Jimmy Foxx of the Boston Red Sox set a major league record when he was walked six times in one game.

  • Johnny Vander Meer walks four consecutive batters to start a game becoming the first major league pitcher to do so. He'd take the loss as the New York Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds, 6-0.

  • Ben Hogan won the U.S. Open for the second straight year.

  • The St. Louis Browns beat the New York Yankees, 3-1. The win snapped the Browns 14 game losing streak as well as stopping the Yankees 18 game winning streak.

  • Dixie Howell, who came on in relief for the Chicago White Sox and pitched 3.7 innings, hits two home runs to help beat the Washington Senators, 8-6.

  • The Chicago White Sox and the Seattle Pilots play a game at County Stadium in Milwaukee in an attempt to bring baseball back to the city. Just 13,133
  • U.S. President Nixon sent a telegram to Reggie Jackson thanking him for hitting two home runs while he was in the park on June 11.

  • Mike Epstein homers for his forth consecutive at bat (over two games) and helps the Oakland A's beat the Washington Senators, 5-0. All five runs were scored with solo homers.

  • Tom Seaver throws his first no-hitter as he helps the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-0.

  • The "Chicago Tribune" purchased the Chicago Cubs baseball club from the P.K. Wrigley Chewing Gum Company for $20.5 million.

  • Willie Banks broke the world record for the triple jump with a leap of 58 feet, 11-1/2 inches at the U.S.A. championships in Indianapolis, IN.

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins obtained Joe Mullen from the Calgary Flames for a second round choice in the 1990 NHL Amateur Draft. Pittsburgh also selected Jaromir Jagr (fifth overall) in the first round of the entry draft.

  • Otis Nixon swipes 6 bases in one game for the Atlanta Braves, establishing a National League record and tying the major league record set by Eddie Collins in 1912
  • Andy Ashby becomes just the 12th player to strike out the side on just 9 pitches.

  • Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls scored 55 points in an NBA Finals game against the Phoenix Suns becoming the the first player to score 50 points in a Finals games since Jerry West in 1969.

  • Salt Lake City was awarded the XIX Winter Olympic Games to be held in 2002.

  • In Lusaka, Sambia, fans stampeded the field at the World Cup match between Zambia and Sudan. Nine people were killed and 78 were injured.

  • John Olerud hits for the cycle becoming the 21st player in major league history to hit for the cycle more than once in his career. Out of all the players to accomplish the feat, Olerud is the player with the fewest career triples (12)

  • The NHL Board of Governors approved the sale of the Disney owned Mighty Ducks of Anaheim to Henry and Susan Samueli. The franchise would later be renamed the Anaheim Ducks.

  • Sammy Sosa makes his major league debut for the Texas Rangers. Sosa becomes the youngest Dominican to start in a major league game as he bats leadoff and went 2-4 with a double in a 8-3 loss to the New York Yankees.
