- Benjamin Shibe was granted United States patent protection for the cork baseball center.

- The Philadelphia Athletics are losing to the Cleveland Indians in the 7th inning, but go on to score 1 in the 7th, 1 in the 8th, and 13 in the 9th to win the game, 17-15.

- Cincinnati Reds pitcher, Johnny Vander Meer tosses his second consecutive no-hitter. He is the only pitcher to ever accomplish the feat.

- Harry Danning hits for the cycle. He is the last player to have an inside-the-park homerun as part of the cycle. The ball he hit for the homer got stuck behind the Eddie Grant memorial at the Polo Grounds and the center fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Vince DiMaggio can't find it in time.

- The Detroit Tigers play in their first night game at home and beat the Philadelphia Athletics, 4-1.

- Eddie Waitkus of the Philadelphia Phillies was seriously injured when a female fan entered his hotel room and shot him.

- Juan Marichal of the San Francisco Giants threw the first Giants' no-hitter since Carl Hubbell in 1929.

- Denny McLain enters the game in relief in the first inning and strikes out the first 7 batters he faces to set a major league record. He helps the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox, 6-5.

- The New York Mets dealt Tom Seaver to the Cincinnati Reds.

- Jack Nicklaus won his fourth U.S. Open title.

- Jeff Reardon notches his 341st save when he protects a 1-0 lead for the Boston Red Sox. The save would move him past Rollie Fingers into first on the all-time saves list.

- Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 100th career home run making him the sixth youngest to reach 100.

- "If the glove don't fit, you must acquit." One of the most memorable moments of the O.J. Simpson murder trial occurred. O.J. was asked to put on a pair of gloves. The gloves were said to have been worn by the killer on the night of the murders of Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman. The gloves appeared not to fit.

- The Los Angeles Dodgers turn their first triple play in 47 years.

- Jim Abbott, a pitcher for the Atlanta Braves who was born with just one arm, gets his first major league hit.
- Will Clark gets his 2000th career hit.

- The New York Yankees announced plans for a new $800 million stadium to be built next to Yankee Stadium and be ready by the 2009 season.
