  • The Cincinnati Red Stockings lose to the Brooklyn Atlantics, 8-7 after winning the first 27 games of their season. The game features the first recorded double play and the first known switch hitter, Bob Ferguson

  • George Hall of the Philadelphia Athletics becomes the first player to hit for the cycle

  • New York Yankees manager, Joe McCarthy, and Lou Gehrig are tossed out of a game. McCarthy is suspended for 3 games, but Gehrig isn't and his consecutive game streak stays alive at 1,249 games

  • Warren Spahn strikes out 18 batters in 15 innings tying a National League record, but his Chicago Cubs still lose to the Milwaukee Braves, 3-1
  • Dewey Griggs, a scout for the Milwaukee Braves, signs Hank Aaron

  • The New York Yankees complete a sweep of the Cleveland Indians and extend their winning streak to 18 games.

  • Duke Snider hits his 400th career home run off of Bob Purkey to help the New York Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds, 10-3

  • Jim Maloney keeps the New York Mets hitless for 10 innings, but the Cincinnati Reds still lose, 1-0 when Maloney allows an 11th inning home run to Johnny Lewis.

  • Reggie Jackson leads the Oakland A's to a 21-7 win over the Boston Red Sox with 5 hits (2 of them homers) and 10 RBI

  • San Francisco Giants firstbaseman, Willie McCovey hits his 513th home run becoming the all-time left handed National League home run leader.

  • Mike Benjamin goes 6-7 in a 13 inning game for the San Francisco Giants. He also knocks in the winning run to beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-3. He sets a major league record with 14 hits in 3 games.

  • Cal Ripken plays in his 2,216th game passing Sachio Kinugasa of the Hiroshima Carp in the Japanese Central League to become the world wide Iron Man

  • For the first time since 1972 no DH is used on a day where all the teams are playing. There are 14 interleague games scheduled and all of them take place in National League parks

  • Fred McGriff comes off the DL to hit cleanup for the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was the first time that he was on the DL in his 18 year career.

  • Ichiro Suzuki becomes the 3rd fastest major leaguer to reach the 1000 hit plateau. The 31 year old Seattle Mariner accomplished the feat in 696 games.
  • Benches clear in a game between the Los Angeles Angels and the Washington Nationals after a foreign substance is found on the glove of Angels' hurler, Brendan Donnelly and the skippers for the two teams, Mike Scioscia and Frank Robinson get into a heated argument.

  • The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic 4-1 to win their 15th NBA title.
  • Phil Jackson leads the Los Angeles Lakers to the NBA title. In the process, he earns his 10th Championship as Head Coach, surpassing Red Auerbach for the most titles in NBA coaching history.
