  • Bob Wicker, pitcher for the Chicago Cubs gets a 1-0 victory over the New York Giants with a 12 inning, 1-hit performance. He had a no-hitter going for 9.1 IP before Sam Merte hit a single in the tenth.

  • Johnny Vander Meer tosses a no-hitter for the Cincinnati Reds. It was the first of two consecutive no-hitters that he would throw.

  • Ben Hogan returned to tournament play after a near fatal car accident and he won the U.S. Open.

  • Detroit Tigers slugger, Norm Cash hits a home run off of Joe McClain in a 7-4 loss to the Washington Senators. The blast was the first fair ball hit by a Tiger to clear the right field roof and leave the stadium.

  • The New York Mets and Chicago Cubs combine to hit 11 homers in a double header, tying the major league mark set by the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers in 1950

  • Hank Aaron tied the National League record with 14 grand-slam home runs in a career.

  • The Kansas City Scouts and Washington Capitals officially received their NHL franchises. The Scouts moved to Denver before the start of the 1976-77 season to become the Colorado Rockies and later the New Jersey Devils.

  • Pete Rose hits a hard grounder and beats it out for an infield single, but the official scorer ruled the hit an error, not wanting Rose to pass Stan Musial on the all-time hits list. A planned fireworks display mistakenly goes off to commemorate the event that doesn't actually happen.
  • The Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles, 8-2 in the last game before the players go on the first major league baseball strike in a work stoppage that would last 50 days.

  • New York Yankees pitcher, Rick Rhoden becomes the first pitcher to start a game as the designated hitter.

  • Nolan Ryan becomes the oldest player to ever toss a no-hitter with the sixth of his career. He becomes the first to throw a no-hitter in 3 different decades and the first to do so for 3 different teams.

  • Mark McGwire homers in five consecutive games, tying a major league record.
  • Lee Smith sets a major league record by recording his 16th save in his 16th appearance. The record was previously held by Doug Jones who saved 15 games in 15 appearances in 1988.

  • Roger Clemens loses his first start of the year after starting out 11-0 for the Toronto Blue Jays.

  • Six Houston Astros pitchers combine to no-hit the New York Yankees setting a record. It was the first time that the Yankees were no-hit since 1958, a span of 6,980 games.
