  • The first Major League Baseball All-Star game to be played indoors took place at the Astrodome in Houston, TX.

  • Former Arsenal player Terry Neill is appointed manager of the club.

  • Pete Sampras of the United States set a record when he won the men's singles tennis championship at Wimbledon. It was his 13th Grand Slam title.

  • Pittsburgh Pirate Randall Simon clubs one of the Brewers/Klement's Racing Sausages (the Italian to be exact) over the head with a wooden bat, sending the costumed person to the ground and setting off a chain reaction that also collects the Hot Dog. Simon will later be cited for disorderly conduct and fined $432 for the incident.
