During the All-Star Game, Earl Averill hit a line drive that broke one of Dizzy Dean's toes.

West Germany defeats Netherlands 2-1 to win the FIFA World Cup. A second minute penalty by Johann Neeskens gave the Dutch an early lead but subsequent goals by Paul Breitner through a penalty in the 25th minute and the eventual match winner in the 43rd minute by Gerd Muller secured the Germans their second World Cup.

One of Arsenal's most popular players, striker Charlie George, joined Derby County in a £99,000 deal.

Boris Becker became the youngest, the first unseeded and the first German player to win the Wimbledon men's finals.

Martina Navratilova won a record ninth Wimbledon women's singles title.

In Florida, Darrell Armstrong of the Orlando Magic was arrested after being accused of fighting with a female police officer outside a nightclub. The case was eventually dismissed.
