- During the All-Star Game, Earl Averill hit a line drive that broke one of Dizzy Dean's toes.

- West Germany defeats Netherlands 2-1 to win the FIFA World Cup. A second minute penalty by Johann Neeskens gave the Dutch an early lead but subsequent goals by Paul Breitner through a penalty in the 25th minute and the eventual match winner in the 43rd minute by Gerd Muller secured the Germans their second World Cup.

- One of Arsenal's most popular players, striker Charlie George, joined Derby County in a £99,000 deal.

- Boris Becker became the youngest, the first unseeded and the first German player to win the Wimbledon men's finals.
