Uruguay defeats Argentina 4-2 to win the first FIFA World Cup. The final match was played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Emile Zatopek of Czechoslovakia wins the Gold Medal and sets an Olympic record for the 10,000M race at the Games of the XIV Olympiad held in London, England.

England defeat West Germany 4-2 after extra time to win the FIFA World Cup. This was England's first World Cup Title. The final match was played at Wembley Stadium in London, England.
