- For the first time, admission was charged to see a baseball game. $0.50 admission was chrged to see Brooklyn and New York play baseball at Fashion Park Race Course on Long Island, NY. The players did not get a salary until until 1863.

- The National Football League (NFL) ruled that no professional team could sign a player with remaining college eligibility.

- The PGA championship changed from match play to stroke play.

- Rogers Hornsby played in the final game of his career. The Hall of Famer finished his career with a .358 AVG, the second best career average in major league history behind Ty Cobb.
