  • Louisville switch-pitcher Tony Mullane becomes the first player in baseball history to pitch both right and left-handed in a game. Louisville and Mullane lose to Baltimore 9-8.

  • In a 5-0 victory over the Cardinals, Christy Mathewson finally yielded a walk, snapping his MLB record walkless streak at 68 innings. The record would stand until topped by Bill Fischer in 1962.

  • The Black Sox trial begins in Chicago.

  • 18-year-old Mel Ott hits his first Major League home run, an inside-the-park job, that rolls all the way to the Polo Grounds' center field clubhouse after Hack Wilson misses a shoe-string catch attempt.
  • Ty Cobb collects his 4,000th career basehit, a double, off Sam Gibson. Detroit beats Lefty Grove and the Philadelphia Athletics 5-3.

  • The Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Athletics set an American League record for the most runs scored in a game. The sox beat the A's 21-14.

  • The Chicago White Sox beat Boston 4-3 in 10 innings, denying Lefty Grove his 300th career win.

  • The New York Giants and Philadelphia Phillies strand 30 base-runners, tying the Major League record.

  • Ted Williams registers his first career 5-for-5 day in a 9-8 loss to the St. Louis Browns.

  • Cleveland Indians slugger Albert Belle is suspended for 10 days for using a corked bat against the Chicago White Sox on July 14.

  • Tragedy strikes the Tour de France, when Italian rider Fabio Casartelli is killed when he crashes into a concrete barrier while riding through the Pyrenees. Casartelli who was just 24 was one of the rising stars in cycling after capturing a gold medal in the 1992 Olympics. It would be the third fatality in the history of the grueling cycle race.

  • Kansas City Royals centerfielder Johnny Damon ties an MLB record by hitting 4 doubles in a 12-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Damon went 5-for-5 in the game.

  • Astros slugger Jeff Bagwell hits for the cycle in a 17-11 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

  • Boston Red Sox centerfielder Johnny Damon goes 0-for-5, ending an MLB season-best hitting streak at 29 games.
