- Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak is snapped by the Cleveland Indians. Tomorrow, he will begin a new streak which will last for 17 games.

- For the first time ever, an MLB ball club, the Brooklyn Dodgers, is made up of a majority of black players.

- Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals strikes out Cesar Geronimo to earn his 3,000th strikeout of his career.

- The opening ceremonies for the Games of the XXI Olympiad take place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

- Brazil wins their fourth FIFA World Cup by defeating Italy 3-2 on penalties. The match ended 0-0 after extra time thereby forcing the penalty shootout to decide the match. The final was played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

- Michael Vick indicted on charges of competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting and conducting the enterprise across state lines.
