Cap Anson is awarded one of the earliest intentional walks in recorded MLB history.

Boston Red Sox owner Harry Frazee (best remembered for selling Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees) sells the team to a group of businessmen from Ohio for over $1 million.

Boston's LF Ted Williams fractures his left elbow making a diving catch in the All-Star Game. He would later reveal that he was never the same player after the injury.

In just his second MLB start, the Giants' Al Worthington throws his second straight complete game shutout to become the first National League pitcher to begin a career with back-to-back shutouts in the 20th century.

Giants' OF Don Mueller hits for the cycle in a 13-7 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Earl Weaver becomes the Baltimore Orioles' manager.

Tony Conigliaro calls a 5am press conference to announce his retirement. He was never the same after getting beaned by a pitch in the left eye in 1967.

Italy defeats West Germany 3-1 to win the 1982 FIFA World Cup. The Italian goals were scored by Paolo Rossi in the 57th minute, Marco Tardelli in the 69th minute and Alessandro Altobelli in the 81st minute. The lone German goal came in the 83rd minute from Paul Breitner. The win was the Italians third World Cup.

Nolan Ryan records his 4,000th strikeout (Danny Heep) in a 4-3 Astros victory over the Mets.

Baltimore's Billy Ripken joins his brother Cal in the lineup, marking the first time in MLB history that a father (Cal Ripken, Sr.) has ever managed two sons in a Major League game.

Bo Jackson earns the All-Star Game MVP award as the AL beats the NL 5-3.

The San Francisco Giants retire Orlando Cepeda's number 30 before a game with the St. Louis Cardinals.
