Julio Franco Returns to the Braves

by Christof

The Atlanta Braves signed free agent Julio Franco to a contract today. Franco was released by the New York Mets on July 12, 2007. Franco is 48 years old and desires to play baseball until he is 50.

Franco became the whipping boy for Mets fans as the Mets struggled to win consistently during the first half of this MLB season. Why the fans blamed a bench player who only ocassionally pinch hit is beyond me, however, that is what exactly occurred.

Personally, it seems to be as though the Mets did not properly use Franco. I think Franco numbers would be better if he was played on a more consistent basis. This will likely occur with the Braves.

Besides playing, Franco brings a tremendous amount of leadership and character to the Braves locker room. These intangibles, although not measured by statistics, are very critical in a close playoff race. Hence, do not be surprised to see that Franco's presence becomes a key component in the Braves ability to win the NL East come October.

Does this mean that Bobby Cox will not be the oldest in the Braves dugout?

It means the Mets get knocked out of the playoffs by a crucial Julio Franco pinch hit late in the season...

Remember, there was some discussion about Franco being a major influence in the Mets clubhouse. A Bad one.

I also watched him hit 2 HRs as a Milwaukee Brewer (I'll always remember him as a Phillie) in 1997 in Arlington and thinking he was old THEN!!!

My bad, he only hit one HR that day, Juan Gone hit two... but he did play both games!

Wasn't Julio Franco "the player to be named later" in some trade for Babe Ruth? :)

Yay, Julio Franco's gonna come back to the diamond.

By now I'm sure he has to use a cane to walk. Can be use his bat as one, I wonder?

Or maybe swing with the cane, that would be cool.

Saying Franco wasn't used enough is insane, if anything he was used too much, generally the first off the bench despite hitting .200.

I love how you can struggle (the Mets) and be 3 games UP in the division.

A rash of injuries? Everyone has injuries throughout the season. Get over it and grow a pair, New York.

Underachieving superstars? Del-GOT-what? Please, once you hit the plateau your bound to come falling down just a little bit. Meaning every proclaimed superstar has a down year.

Whatever it is, keep it up and go Bravos! The least they will do is fire Willie Randolph, which would presumably fix everything, huh?

Would like to know the Braves reasoning for bringing Franco back. Maybe Bobby Cox just likes having him around. Braves probably were only team even thinking of bringing him back to majors.

Do you think Julio's AARP card gets the team discounts at the hotels and restaurants they go to.

Coca Cola is the only thing keeping Franco alert and alive. It is a natural move that he'd move back to the city that houses the largest bottling plant of his magic elixir.

haha julio franco's a clubhouse novelty because he didn't fit on an injury riddled mets outfield that caused a shortage in a backup first baseman (green is the backup but obviously can't play backup when duty calls in right)... now the braves are sitting nice because of tex and those intangibles in the dugout will become more apparent
