[edit] Biography

Born on October 16, 1967 in San Pedro de Macoris, Macoris (Dominican Republic), Josias Manzanillo (Josias (Adams) Manzanillo) played for the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and Florida Marlins over the course of his 11 year career. Manzanillo broke into the bigs on October 5, 1991 with the Boston Red Sox, and put up a 3.38 ERA in 58.2 innings pitched in 2000, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Josias Manzanillo's best season was 2001, when he posted a 3.39 ERA and struck out 80 batters.

Manzanillo was also one of the player named in baseball's Mitchell Report. According to former Mets clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski, Manzanillo requested that Radomski inject him with Deca-Durabolin in the Mets clubhouse. Radomski complied, and stated that it was the only time he saw a major league player actually take steroids. Radomski maintains that he never sold Manzanillo steroids, and claims that the only time he had any steroids-related experience with Manzanillo was when he injected the pitcher in the Mets clubhouse.

Although Manzanillo did not meet with investigators for the Mitchell Report (they were unable to arrange a meeting with Manzanillo's lawyer before the report was finalized), his lawyer did provide the Mitchell investigators with a statement by Manzanillo. In this statement, Manzanillo claimed that Radomski urged him to purchase steroids, and after paying for the steroids, Manzanillo "chickened out." Manzanillo denied using performance-enhancing drugs.

Manzanillo was also involved in another drug scandal, one involving illegal prescription medication (read: not performance-enhancing). Jose Cervantes was detained on September 7, 2001, and was found in possession of many prescription medications. Cervantes admitted buying these drugs in Mexico and selling them to major league players in the United States. Cervantes stated that he sold Manzanlillo anti-inflammatory drugs, and provided Manzanillo's name and telephone number to the authorities. Manzanillo claims that he did not know why Cervantes had his name or phone number and that he "knew nothing about such an incident."
