[edit] Biography

Born on January 31, 1984 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Josh Johnson (Joshua Michael Johnson) played for the Florida Marlins for his entire 2 year career. Johnson broke into the bigs on September 10, 2005 with the Florida Marlins, and put up a 3.10 ERA in 157 innings pitched in 2006, his rookie year.

[edit] Scouting Report

Assets:

  1. Good 3-pitch combination of 93-96mph fastball, slider, and change-up
  2. Good size and form on the mound. 6'7" frame allows him to throw down on the hitter and produces better movement and velocity on his offspeed pitches
  3. Solid pick-off move to 1st base.

Flaws:

  1. Command could use much improvement. Prone to walks and makes many mistakes when throwing the slider in hitters' counts.
  2. Pick-off move to 2nd base has awkward mechanics. Prone to balks when making move to 2nd.

Potential:

  • If Johnson continues to use his 3-pitch arsenal effectively, he has the goods to become a solid middle-of-the-rotation pitcher and a good innings-eater. Think of Scott Elarton (LOW), Kris Benson (MID), and Tim Hudson (HIGH) when visualizing what Johnson could do.
