[edit] Biography
New York Yankees farmhand Jose Tabata has been called "a legitimate five tool talent" whose "athleticism may be unmatched in the organization, including the major[s]".[1] In 2006, Baseball America named him the third most highly rated prospect in the Yankee organization, and said he was the organization's best prospect when it came to hitting for average.[2].
In 2006, Tabata played in the Futures Game, going 1-for-3 with a single of Philip Hughes.
[edit] Scouting Report
In September 2005, Baseball America described Tabata as:
- a five-tool player and he has as much upside as any prospect in the Yankees system. He made his U.S. debut this year in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League, where he hit .314/.382/.417 with thee [sic] homers, 25 RBIs and a league-best 22 steals in 44 games.
- He's solidly built at 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds and will have more power as he gets stronger and more experienced. He drew more walks (15) than strikeouts (14), and while we shouldn't infer too much about his plate discipline when he's facing such raw pitching, that's definitely a positive sign. He has plus speed and the tools to play center field[.][3]
One lay observer compared his throwing arm favorable to that of Ichiro Suzuki and Vladimir Guerrero, concluding that Tabata "doesn't have a gun. He has an accurate rifle." [4]
