Jose Reyes Please Take Care of Yourself!

Jose Reyes stirs the pot for the Mets. Something good always happens when he is on the bases, and it is a pure thing of beauty to watch him go when he hits one up the gap. When he is going, the Mets are going, and right now they are going to a double digit lead in the East. If Reyes doesn't take care of himself, the Mets will have a disaster without him.

The other night, Reyes slid head first into first base against the Marlins. It was a foot race, and when first baseman Mike Jacobs got to the bag, his foot made contact with Reyes' hand, cutting is finger. He had to be taken out of the game, and now will not play in the All Star game. He did get away very lucky, by not breaking a finger or his hand. Now, he comes in during the doubleheader as a pinchrunner, and what does he do??? Slide head first again! Jose, don't be so dumb! We need you.

The Mets machine is driven by Jose Reyes. Without him they will suffer. And they will be without him if he doesn't take care of himself.

I think most people would agree that Reyes is the igniter of this offense. As I've mentioned in other threads, he's on pace for approximately a .350 obp, 145 runs scored, 72 stolen bases, and 23 triples.

Any chance he'll be a strong MVP candidate with those numbers? I'd have to say yes.

Yeah, you can't fault the guy for playing hard.

That's almost like being upset with Derek Jeter for making that play a few years ago when he dove into the stands. It shows heart, not stupidity. (Note: Any Derek Jeter praise is for the good of the argument and not the opinion of this user.)

But don't forget, Travis Hafner and Kevin Youkilis are better leadoff hitters than Reyes. My computer says so.

Forget computers for a second... Doesn't it make sense that a player who is on base 40% of the time is doing a better job of helping his team score than a player who is on base only 35% of the time. Also, you have this notion that us "statheads" don't consider things like stealing bases but we do.

...and Hafner gets on base 46% of the time. Of course he would make a better leadoff hitter than Reyes.

You're wasting your time talking sense to him. He's a Mets fan. Things like common sense don't mean anything to them when you're talking about their players.

.350 obp for a lead-off guy...nothing to write home about, pretty weak actually.

leading off is about scoring runs. He's leading both leagues in that department.

But is he going to be a one-year wonder? The OBS is a warning sign.

scoring runs is simply a function of getting on base and having a potent line-up behind you to drive you in. hence, all other things being equal, scoring runs is directly correlated to OBP. Reyes relatively weak OBP suggests that the Mets line-up has more to do with it (see Beltran's very high SLG%, and Wright's big RBI total). Reyes also doesn't see nearly enough pitches per plate appearance, another crucial function of a good lead-off hitter.

how about the fact that Reyes is a terror on the basepaths. He creates runs moreso than any other player in baseball. OBP is a great stat, but it's not the end all.
