Jose Offerman has Sparked a New Debate in Baseball

Jose Offerman was arrested and charged with assault for charging the mound with a baseball bat, breaking the pitchers finger, and knocking out the catcher.  But this is cause for an interesting debate, if a bat is a weapon, then why isn’t a 90 mile an hour fastball? Sure the bat can severally injure, but a fastball to the head could easily kill you, we saw this a few weeks ago when the third base coach in the minor leagues was hit in the head with a line drive.

So the debate here is, if Offerman is in trouble, why not the pitcher, is it an acceptable thing in baseball to intentionally throw at hitter?  And, I do not understand why the law is involved here, they aren’t involved with other baseball brawls where punches are thrown, baseball and its representatives usually take charge, but that hasn’t happened in this case. And don’t get me wrong I’m not at all for what Offerman did, its horrible, but the law shouldn’t be involved, and baseball should re think there consequences for pitchers who intentionally throw at hitters.

I didn't hear that the pitcher threw at him intentionally. Is that what happened?

He threw a slider...so i'm fairly confident he didn't throw it intentionally...

Ok...If i'm at work and someone accidently clocks me on the head with...whatever, my company might be responsible, but not the person. If i intern respond by hitting him over the head with my computer moniter, I would most likely be taken away in cuffs...

On top of that, lets say i get into a heated argument at work...depending on how it happens, who's involved and the company itself (and their standing with the police) it may or may not be handled by the police...

How many times have you seen legit fights between people in baseball...maybe a punch or 2, but its broken up quickly...and if they do get into a real fight, its usually pretty big news...

Agreed. In a sport that pretty allows small-scale fights, it's insane to swing your bat at two people that didn't injure you, and only unintentionally caused you some fleeting pain. He was hit on the calf! It's not even like he was hit above the shoulders!

If you're a pro pitcher who's going head hunting (Pedro style!), then you're most likely either going to him them in a fleshy spot (like the ass) or (if you're a jerk) you're going for the elbows/arms or the ehad

Also with pitchers beaning guys and an injury occurring it's hard for the cops to prove that the pitcher was intending to hurt the batter. But when a batter rushes the mound with a bat its easier to prove intent.

Violence is accepted in sports as part of the game. There's unwritten rules that violence can break out in a number of ways. And this isn't just in sports like hockey, rugby, or football; violence can occur in soccer, basketball, and baseball. But there's an accepted kind of violence in the sports, and an unaccepted kind. A pitcher throwing at a guy intentionally is accepted violence in baseball, just like a runner bowling over a catcher, or a runner taking a guy out in a double play. But what Offerman did was not an acceptable form of violence within the game.

From what I'd gather, it was a 90 mph cut fastball or slider that hit him on the calf. Now if that hit him in the head; I just can't describe it for you because there has been pitchers head hunting in the past and it's dangerous. Now I understand, the pitcher, Matt Beech, can come inside and try to brush him off the plate but after retrubtion from giving up a home run, that's really unaccpetable. Now Jose Offerman had ZERO right to come out with a baseball bat and try to swing for his head. Now baseball can't rethink with regards to the pitcher throwing to the hitter. Sometimes the ball can slip out of a pitchers' hand and there is nothing you or anybody else on the field can do about it. Or it could be pitchers' mechanics. Sometimes you just can throw a pitcher out of a game because he threw at hitter because if you do that that just ruins the game further.

Perhaps Offerman and Clemens could throw together an instructional video on what to do with baseball bats outside the art of hitting...

It still floors me every time they say "former All-Star Jose Offerman"

Equally dubious when replacing "Offerman" with "Canseco"...
