From the "Yankees Tonight" blog, Jose Molina is the new backup catcher for the New York Yankees.
Yesterday, the Yankees acquired C Jose Molina in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels. Now Jose Molina is only batting .224 this season with 10 RBI's but he doesn't walk very much (3 walks in 131 plate appearances). His defense is a tremendous upgrade over Nieves. Now in July he has batting a .185 but then again that's a lot better than Wil Nieves' .164 season average, ain't it?
In a way it makes sense for Angels to trade Molina because they already have a surplus of catchers with Mike Napoli and Jeff Mathis. So in a way that does make sense for the Angels to trade Molina. In the trade, the Angels acquired minor league RHP Jeff Kennard . Kennard was selected in the 40th round in the 2000 draft. Jeff Kennard had a 1-4 record in 31 games with a 2.73 ERA with Double-A Trenton. Now hopefully, he'll get his opportunity with the Angels.
Now the Yankees have called up LHP Sean Henn to take the roster spot of RHP Matt DeSalvo. DeSalvo, who pitched Game 2 of the day/night doubleheader, who took RHP Edwar Ramirez's spot on the roster was demoted back to Scranton after only pitching 4 and 2/3 innings. Nieves will be designated for assignment once Molina is on the Yankees. In retrospect, Henn is really taking Ramirez's spot.
