Jose Mesa To the Rescue

by user Christof

The Philadelphia Phillies has announced that they signed relief pitcher Jose Mesa to a contract. This is Mesa's second tour of duty for the Phillies this decade. Previously, Mesa was the Phillies closer from 2001 through 2003.

Mesa began the season in the Detroit Tigers bullpen. While on the Tigers, he compiled an ERA of over 12. This led quickly to his release. And now, Mesa has returned to the Phillies.

It is true that Phillies' fans, the handful that have yet to either go postal or quit on the team for this year, have hoped that the club would address its woeful bullpen. Sadly, Jose Mesa was not what we were hoping for. What may be sader that Mesa, with the 12+ ERA, is likely going to improve Phillies bullpen.

On other Phillies matters, it looks like starting pitcher Freddy Garcia will be placed on the disabled list shortly. After giving up 6 runs in less than 2 innings pitch last night against the Kansas City Royals, it sure looks like Garcia is either seriously injured or completely over the hill. At least by placing Garcia on the DL, the Phillies will now have a chance every fifth game to win.

The life and times of a Philadelphia sports fan is still tough.

No, Percival was signed by the Cards yesterday. As far as Garcia, he was at least fun wathcing him flap his arms after each gopher ball he gave up yesterday.

Jay Mariotti went crazy when Ken Williams shipped Garcia out of Chicago. Looks like the GM knew something that Philly or Mariotti did not. The guy is breaking down.

alright, this means squat but espn's power rankings are ridiculous...the phillies swept the mets and the mets dropped from 2 to 5...fair enough...the phillies moved from 14 to 14...they swept the best team in the league and didn't move up...who does these things?

Beating up the Mets minor league team does not really get you a boost in the rankings.

Don't give me that...you didn't have what? Moises Alou and Shawn Green...last I check, reyes, delgado, Beltran, & wright all played...lest we forget, the 2 key cogs in the phils pen are on the DL, so we have no back end right now...and the pen gave up a woping...0 runs...nice

Mesa has given up 16 runs and 19 hits in 11.2 innings with the Tigers. At 41 he may have been the wrong pitcher for the Phillies to sign but guess they had to sign somebody.

Wild Thing could probably do as well as Mesa.

Mitch Williams had one of the weirdest deliveries that I've ever seen. That might make an interesting post here - which pitcher had/has the funkiest pitching fundamentals. Toss up for me between Nomo and Dontrelle Willis.
