Jose Mesa To the Rescue

The Philadelphia Phillies has announced that they signed relief pitcher Jose Mesa to a contract. This is Mesa's second tour of duty for the Phillies this decade. Previously, Mesa was the Phillies closer from 2001 through 2003.
Mesa began the season in the Detroit Tigers bullpen. While on the Tigers, he compiled an ERA of over 12. This led quickly to his release. And now, Mesa has returned to the Phillies.
It is true that Phillies' fans, the handful that have yet to either go postal or quit on the team for this year, have hoped that the club would address its woeful bullpen. Sadly, Jose Mesa was not what we were hoping for. What may be sader that Mesa, with the 12+ ERA, is likely going to improve Phillies bullpen.
On other Phillies matters, it looks like starting pitcher Freddy Garcia will be placed on the disabled list shortly. After giving up 6 runs in less than 2 innings pitch last night against the Kansas City Royals, it sure looks like Garcia is either seriously injured or completely over the hill. At least by placing Garcia on the DL, the Phillies will now have a chance every fifth game to win.
The life and times of a Philadelphia sports fan is still tough.
