Jones vs. Zumaya

Todd Jones is the Detroit Tigers closer, but many (Tigers fans and fantasy players alike) are wondering how long it's going to be before that role is filled by the fireballing Joel Zumaya.

Todd Jones Joel Zumaya

Jones has seven saves, but has blown his past two opportunities, giving up 4 runs in 2 1/3 innings. He has struck out only two batters all year in 10 2/3 IP, giving him a miniscule 1.69 K/9. That's not the sort of number you want to see from your relief ace/closer. Zumaya's K/9, for comparison, is 8.53. Jones' WHIP is 1.31 with a BAA of .225, while Zumaya boasts 0.95 and .174 numbers respectively. If I'm the manager of the Tigers, Zumaya is my closer. What do you think?

But Jones has 270 career "saves"! He's a "proven closer"!

Good use of "quotes" to imply "sarcasm."

ROFL NOOB!!!!! in the end of a close game, Jones almost always buckles under pressure.

If I was the manager, then Zumaya would definitely be my closer, but I highly doubt Leyland will make the change unless Jones has some serious struggles. Leyland does use Zumaya quite often in high-leverage situations, even though he is not "technically" the closer. If Leyland were to make the change of roles, it likely wouldn't have much of an impact on the win total for the team. Nonetheless, Zumaya would have been my closer on the Tigers as early as last season.

I think Leyland is accidentally making the right choice. Teams don't often bring in the "closer" in the 7th, with one out and the bases juiced. But I'm betting dollars to donuts that he'd bring in Z. And that's where you really want your best guy.

Yeah, but Jones' Leverage Index this season is still much higher than Zumaya's, 2.70 to 1.80.

Good point, although overall it seems as if Jones is still pitching in the higher "leverage" situations.

2006

  1. Jones 1.80
  2. Zumaya 1.49
  3. Rodney 1.45

So far in 2007,

2007

  1. Jones 2.82
  2. Rodney 2.68
  3. Lopez 1.93
  4. Grilli 1.62
  5. Ledezma 1.51
  6. Zumaya 1.23

For what that's worth, Zumaya isn't pitching in the situations he should be so far in 2007.

P.S. Rodney has a 6.30 ERA and 4 losses.

What's the link for BP's version? Also, what's the difference between the 2? I think Fangraphs' is based on Tango Tiger's method...

If you go to BaseballProspectus.com, then "Statistics", it is in the "Relievers Expected Wins Added" data. Here is a [to the definition]. It is based on Keith Woolner's method.

It's a great point if it were true, but Leyland has still been giving the most crucial situations to Jones.

When Jones was hurt at the beginning of 2006, Zoom Zoom was the closer. When Jones came back, ZZ went back to the setup role. ZZ is too young as of yet to be the closer, but he's coming. Jones is teaching ZZ what he knows.
