Jonathon Niese
[edit] Biography
Jon Niese is a left-handed starting pitcher in the New York Mets organization. Born in Defiance, OH, the lanky southpaw is most notable for a rare six-pitch arsenal (four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, changeup, slider, curve, split-fingered fastball). However, due to nerves and lack of consistent mechanics, he hasn't really been able to get all of his pitches working at once consistently. In 2006, when he did have control of all six, he tossed a rare three-hitter with Hagerstown. In 2007, he again threw a shutout when all six of his pitches were working and his mechanics were consistent (this time with St. Lucie).
Niese projects as a back of the rotation starter at this point in his career, but could potentially become a number two starter should he gain consistency. Some scouts have compared Niese to former Mets ace Al Leiter during the height of Leiter's career. Niese throws from a high three quarter arm angle and tops off around 95 mph with his four-seamer.
