[edit] Biography
Jonathan Stewart was born on March 21, 1987 in Fort Lewis, Washington and attended Timberline High School in Lacey, Washington. Stewart is currently the running back for the Oregon Ducks.
[edit] High School
Stewart had the most prolific career of any running back in the history of Washington racking up 7,755 yards and 95 touchdowns in four seasons. In each of his four high school seasons Jonathan managed to eclipse the 1,000 yard mark capping it off with a senior season of 2,301 yards and 32 touchdowns while also returning three punts for touchdowns. Stewart's accolades in high school include being named the Washington 3A offensive co-player of the year, the state Gatorade Player of the Year, a Parade All-American and the starting running back in the 2005 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Many recruiting services and experts had Stewart ranked as the top running back in the country that year if not the top offensive player in the country.
[edit] Freshmen Year
Stewart arrived in Eugene in 2005 and made an immediate impact his freshmen year despite limited playing time. Jonathan would only touch the ball 72 times his first season at Oregon, but would still manage to score nine touchdowns (six rushing, one receiving and two kickoff returns) and average 8.8 all-purpose yards per touch. Among Stewart's nine touchdowns were two kickoff returns for touchdowns, one against Montana and one against Oregon State, becoming the first player in school history to have more than one kickoff return for a touchdown in a season. Stewart would earn Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week honors for his efforts against Oregon State and earn a spot on Sporting News Pac-10 all freshmen team for his efforts all year.
[edit] Sophomore Year
In 2006, Stewart would start twelve games for the Ducks and lead the team in rushing, falling just 19 yards shy of 1,000. He would also chip in ten rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown and finish 6th nationally in kickoff returns. Despite battling an ankle injury for most of the season, Stewart would still manage to rack up 1,771 all-purpose yards, fourth most in school history. His best game of the season probably came against Oregon State when he had 221 all-purpose yards and three rushing touchdowns. Stewart was named second team all-conference for his breakout sophomore season.
[edit] Junior Year
Stewart's 2007 saw him set personal and school records as well as gaining him national notoriety. Against Washington Stewart would carry the ball 32 times for 251 yards, both career bests and the yards being the second highest in school history, and two touchdowns. He would also had a career best 310 all-purpose yards against Stanford and an 88 yard touchdown in the Fresno State game that was the second longest in school history. Stewart's six 100 yard rushing performances in 2007 would give him 11 total for his career and tie him with the all-time Oregon record. He would finish the season as the conference's leading rusher averaging 126.9 and with the conference's most all-purpose yards averaging 196.3. Currently, Stewart is 5th on the school's all-time rushing list with 2,311 yards and 5th in all-time all-purpose yards with 4,175. For his play, Stewart gained recognition as a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award and as a member of the First Team All-Pac-10.
[edit] Scouting Report
Stewart is that rare blend of running back who has the ability to run physically and pound opponents and the speed and moves to elude them. He has excellent quickness and vision that allow him to find the hole and explode through it. Often times, due to his balance and shiftiness, Stewart will make the first defender miss and really shows off his explosiveness when he seemingly hits another gear once he breaks into the open. It are these same qualities, along with excellent hands, that make Jonathan a threat catching the balls out of the backfield as well as on kick returns. Many believed if he returned to school for his senior year he would be the best back in the country, but, having decided to leave, he is still an almost guaranteed first round selection.
