Jon Lester has Cancer

12
Vote

Boston Red Sox rookie Jon Lester has Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, the same cancer that Andres Galarraga had. It was discovered as doctors investigated the back pain that caused him to land on the DL. Lester is 7-2 with a 4.76 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 81 1-3 innings.

Baseball isn't as important as life. Get well soon, Jon.

Lymphoma is a form of blood cancer. It affects antibodies and your T-cells (immune system) and develops in the lymph nodes. My brother has been fighting lymphoma all year, but his was pretty developed when his was discovered, so he has been in and out of radiation and chemo, on and off his death bed all year.

The key is they probably found it pretty early in Lester. Depending on the type (there are over 25 non-Hodgkins lymphomas) and development it can be easily treated or an imminent countdown.

Lemieux had Hodgkins, which is a very treatable cancer.

Prayers to him and his family, it's tough to deal with this kind of thing.

To be fair, the title of the article is kinda b.s...while it technically is a cancer, it's quite different than the blastocytes (tumors) normally associated with 'cancer'. Again, if it's not that developed, you might be calling a shaving nick a decapitation.

It is very treatable. My dad was first diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's (which is what Lester is dealing with; careful not to mix it up with Hodgkins which is usually much more serious) about 11 years ago. Surgery is the usual route, and they'll remove the lymph nodes in his back that are cancerous. If it is like what happened the last time my dad had some issues about 3 years ago, he might also get a bout of radiation to make sure it's gone. He'll be fine, although his immune system will be pretty bad.

Wow. When the Red Sox go back to their old curse ways, they go back hard! Seriously though, all the best to Lester.

In my very non-humble opinion, I would rather see Friskers attempt to make a light of a serious situation and embarass himself, then have an Anon call him out for it. Log in, Armchair up or ignore it. We don't need help deciding it wasn't funny... now, if Lester was a Cub or Indian he'd be on the right track!

Well, that's you. And, in my non-humble opinion, that doesn't say much about you, either.

I really don't need help saying much about me.

BUT... there's already too manny serious moments in life, you don't need to go around making more - again, my oldest brother is on his deathbed in a hospital RIGHT NOW with end-stage lymphoma throughout his body and 3 other tumors in his brain (among other complications)! I understand the nature of the topic, BUT this stuff happens. YOU'RE not the one who is afflicted. It doesn't mean you/I/Friskysman can't have fun.

YOU'RE not going to get cancer for making light of it. If you're not having fun, what are you having???

By the way, Lester is NOT INELIGIBLE for my death pool, you just won't get credit if he goes by lymphoma...car accidents, drowning, struck by lightning, hit by meteor - all could still happen.)

Even though he'll be fine, I'm sure (but WILL die eventually afterall)

AF, you should have worded that "You are an absolute ass. No clue, no class." That would have flowed a lot nicer. But I'm guessing you're not a songwriter like me and Manny.

In the key of G#m - "I called you an absolute ass, no class no clue on a lark, and now I'm wishing you cancer like Terrance and Philip from South Park"

The best to Lester and his family during this very difficult time. I'm sure the hopes and prayers of New Englanders, and baseball fans everywhere, are with him as he goes through this.....we can only hope he comes through OK. This season he showed the promises of a successful career; it would be a shame to have it derailed by something like this.
