Born on November 2, 1914 in Prospect Park, New Jersey, Johnny Vander Meer (John Samuel Vander Meer) played for the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians over the course of his 13 year career. Vander Meer broke into the bigs on April 22, 1937 with the Cincinnati Reds, and put up a 3.84 ERA in 84.1 innings pitched in 1937, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Johnny Vander Meer's best season was 1942, when he posted a 2.43 ERA, won 18 games and struck out 186 batters.

  • In 1938, Vander Meer accomplished something that had never been done before and has never been done since: he threw no-hitters in consecutive starts.
