Born on July 10, 1903 in Remsen, Iowa, Johnny Niggeling (John Arnold Niggeling) played for the Boston Braves, Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Browns and Washington Senators over the course of his 9 year career. Niggeling broke into the bigs on April 30, 1938 with the Boston Braves, and put up a 4.45 ERA in 153.2 innings pitched in 1940, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Johnny Niggeling's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1942, when he posted a 2.66 ERA, won 15 games and struck out 107 batters. However, others believe that it was 1944, when he posted a 2.32 ERA, won 10 games and struck out 121 batters.
