Born on July 14, 1908 in New York, New York, Johnny Murphy (John Joseph Murphy) played for the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox over the course of his 13 year career. Murphy broke into the bigs on May 19, 1932 with the New York Yankees, and put up a 3.12 ERA in 207.2 innings pitched in 1934, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Johnny Murphy's best season was 1941, when he posted a 1.98 ERA and notched 15 saves.
