[edit] Biography

Born on March 17, 1965 in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, John Smiley (John Patrick Smiley) played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Minnesota Twins, Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians over the course of his 12 year career. Smiley broke into the bigs on September 1, 1986 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and put up a 5.76 ERA in 75 innings pitched in 1987, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was John Smiley's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1991, when he posted a 3.08 ERA, won 20 games and struck out 129 batters. However, others believe that it was 1992, when he posted a 3.21 ERA, won 16 games and struck out 163 batters.
