John Schuerholz resigns...

by The Pip

Long time Braves Gm John Schuerholz resigned today.

What a run, no team in the last 15 years cycled through talent in a manner that just kept the team winning. There was a point during this Braves run that it felt like they changed up their lineup every year. The combination of Schuerholz, Cox and Mazzone was a very special thing to have witrnessed as a sports fan. You kind of knew it was done when Leo moved on, and now it's only a matter of another year or two before Cox retires. When even a Yankee dynasty fails to win as many consecutive division titles as the Braves you know you got to watch a great stretch of baseball.

Braves fans do not fret, his understudy Wren is taking over and he will remain on as team President.

If he worked in a bigger city, he'd be talked about as one of the best ever in baseball and in all sports. If the braves had won 2 more titles, even I would be mentioning Auerbach. But they didn't and I didn't.  ;)

He got great talent to keep them going to the playoffs, but he never got talent that won him the playoffs (except that one year). I think if he would have done that, we would be talking more about him.

So when the Yankees lose in the playoffs, it's because they didn't have enough starting pitching. The Braves had a collection of three of the best pitchers of the era, and had very little playoff success. What exactly is the definition of "playoff talent"?

I didn't say anything about starting pitching. It's just the Braves were never able to build the right formula for some reason to get them over the hump and win them the world series, that's all.

My point is, is there any such thing as "the right formula"? Teams that win are said to have "it", teams that lose don't.

WOW! I was not expecting this... Schuerholz created such a great system that allowed the Braves to compete for years on end... what a great AGM (Actual General Manager)...

KWitt made good point...It was something the way the Braves starters who pitched so well during the season suddenly couldn't pitch well during playoff time. With Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz you would think they could have won several World Series championships.

Truely the end of an era. More importantly he will be the GM for the Nats within 2 years.

One of the greats. It is amazing to think of all the players that this guy has seen rise through their system as well as the guys he has brought in.

To think we used to have him in Kansas City. The rest is history.

At least he sent one of his spawns to be GM in KC. That was awfully nice of him.

He resigned so he could accept a promotion...to team president. Left out just a small detail there.

Nope, last sentence. I caught it as I was writing it. Sometimes I can actually edit myself, only sometimes though. I got lucky trying to do that with out my fiancee around to edit me. (She's also the braves fan in the house.)
