[edit] Biography

John Schuerholz (born on October 1, 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland) is the current (2005) general manager of the Atlanta Braves of the National League. Before joining Atlanta, he spent twenty-two years with the Kansas City Royals organization, including nine as the club's GM. Among the teams he has built are the 1985 Royals and 1995 Braves, both world champions. His teams have also won their division 15 times. He is considered the king of scouting credited with an amazing farm system. In 2006, Schuerholz published a book, Built To Win, which chronicled his tenure with the Braves and shed light on some of his most important moves as a GM.

With the Braves' struggles during the 2006 season, some have joked that Schuerholz put more work into his book than making the Braves better during the 2005-06 off-season.

Schuerholz is a graduate of Towson University. His generousity to the university has been rewarded with his name on the athletic complex.

Schuerholz's son, Jonathan, currently plays for the AAA Richmond Braves after playing college baseball for Auburn University. He batted .184 for the Braves in 375 at-bats after his promotion from AA Mississippi.

World Class. Kept a team in playoffs for 14 years and never had more than 95 million dollar a year payroll.

Easily one of the best GMs in baseball when he has a top 5 payroll, but at both stops he has shown a frustrating inability to change his team-building strategy when his payroll is dropped down towards the MLB average.

John Schuerholz is not one of the best GM's. The last time I checked, the Braves still have only won one World Series over the past few decades. A good GM has the balls to let a bad manager go. John, my hat goes off to you for screwing up what could have been a baseball dynasty.
