Born on April 12, 1859 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, John Harkins (John Joseph Harkins) played for the Cleveland Spiders, Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles over the course of his 5 year career. Harkins broke into the bigs on May 2, 1884 with the Cleveland Spiders, and put up a 3.68 ERA in 391 innings pitched in 1884, his rookie year.

Most people believe that John Harkins's best season was 1885, when he posted a 3.75 ERA, won 14 games and struck out 141 batters.
