[edit] Biography

Born on December 24, 1951 in San Diego, California, John D'Acquisto (John Francis D'Acquisto) played for the San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, Montreal Expos, California Angels and Oakland Athletics over the course of his 10 year career. He started his professional career in 1970 at the age of 18,striking out 84 batters in 55 innings in the Pioneer League. The following year,in the Class A Midwest League, he won 10 games with a 3.13 ERA and struck out 244 batters. He moved up to High A Fresno of the California League in 1972,and went 17-6,striking out 245 batters. He was promoted to AAA Phoenix in 1973 and went 16-12 with 185 strikeouts. D'Acquisto was called up to the Major Leagues by the San Francisco Giants at the age of 21 on September 2, 1973. With San Francisco he pitched in 7 games, which included 3 starts and a complete game. He ended the 1973 season with a 1-1 record and a 3.58 ERA,striking out 29 batters in 27.2 Innings. In 1974 he went 12-14 with a 3.77 ERA in 215 innings, walking 124 and striking out 167. He was voted NL Rookie Pitcher of the Year and Topps Rookie Pitcher of the Year. Bill James wrote in his book,"The Mighty Fastball" that during that era, only D'Acquisto matched Nolan Ryan for pure speed on the radar gun. A series of injuries cut short his promising career and he retired after the 1983 season. He came back in 1989 and pitched for 2 teams in the Florida Senior Baseball League. After leaving baseball,he went back to College and got his PhD. in Exercise Physiology and Science. Today,he is a successful businessman in Arizona.

There is some disagreement on what was John D'Acquisto's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1974 with San Francisco, when he posted a 3.77 ERA, won 12 games and struck out 167 batters. However, others believe that it was 1978 with San Diego, when he posted a 2.13 ERA, notched 10 saves and struck out 104 batters in 93 innings while allowing only 60 hits.

John D'Acquisto,PhD. has written a comprehensive thesis on pitching, entitled:

"Comparing the Unconventional Marshall Pitching Motion to a Refined Conventional Pitching Motion That Incorporates Linear and Angular Applied Techniques"

It was written in co-operation with test subject case studies conducted under the supervision of Dr. Mike Marshall. It is recommended reading for all teachers, coaches and students of the art of pitching. It is available for viewing on his ArmchairGM profile page...His username is fastballjohnd...
