John "Hondo" Havlicek

by user Brendan.Canney

I got to thinking after reading ESPN columnist Jayson Stark's new book "The Stark Truth". In the book Stark goes on to name names of current and past baseball players who he thought were underrated or overrated. So I began thinking of players in all walks of sports who are overrated and underrated and John Havlicek came to mind. I consider him one of the most, if not the most, underrated player of all time. Not too many people associate that name with the one of the greatest of all time or even with the Boston Celtics. Most people would say Larry Bird, Bill Russell, John McHale, and Robert Parrish. I'm certainly not arguing the fact that those names shouldn't be synonymous with Celtics basketball but too many people leave Hondo's name out of that list. Only teammates Bill Russell and Sam Jones can say that they had won as many championships (8) as Havlicek did during their respective NBA careers. Havlicek also holds the record for most points scored (26,895) and games played (1,270) as a Celtic. Havlicek to his credit also made 13 straight All-Star teams, four All-NBA first teams and seven second teams, and was named to the NBA All-Defensive First or Second Team eight times. The man won the 1974 Finals MVP, and to this day, he ranks 10th in points, eighth in minutes, and seventh in playoff points. How does a guy with those kind of credentials get pushed out of memory? I could bet that if you asked a hundred people to name the top 30 players of all-time Hondo would be named maybe 5 times or less. Talk about an underrated player.

you mean jayson i'm assuming. I agree but "Hondo" being underrated comes along with the mystic and the greatness of Russell. I don't think people truly appreciate Bill Russell, i mean how many of the greats can say they coached and played for a champion? To your point, name a guy who came off the bench and still scored 26,000 points? Hondo. The best sixth man of all time.

Let's thank Brandon for posting an entire article without "teaser" garbage that is filtering over on ArmchairGM. But is this guy really underrated?

In my experience of talking to sports educated men about the greatest NBA players of all time NONE of them said a word about Hondo.

Eh, I mean, the guys I talk to know sports but when all time greats and NBA come up Havlicek doesn't. It's not about them not knowing the NBA, it's just them not knowing enough about Havlicek's contributions.

Good comeback, Brendan. If we consider ourselves fans of a sport, then I think we should have some familiarity of the players before our time. I suggest you go here and take a look at his numbers. As a starting point, he played his last game 29 years ago and is #10 all time in points.

As far as I am concerned, I do not underrate John Havlicek. I ranked him No. 10 when I came up with a list of the top 50 players in NBA history in my column in a national daily here in the Philippines back in 1996. I still rank him well within the top 12 today. In fact, he, Larry Bird and Jerry West are the only white players I would choose in an all-time All-Star team for a sport that has become predominantly black. Bird, West, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Oscar Robertson, Elgin Baylor, Shaquille O'Neal and Tim Duncan are perhaps the only players I would rank ahead of good ol' Hondo, and that's saying something considering that you won't see Karl Malone, Hakeem Olajuwon, Bob Pettit, Julius Erving or even Rick Barry there. I simply regard Hondo as the quintessential team player who could be great on his own, and that won't ever change regardless of the arrival of the Kobe Bryants and Kevin Durants.

Yeah, if i had to pick say a 12 man alltime team havlicek would certainly be on that team.I watched alot of his games from 1969 until he retired. He could do it all.He was a great defender, scored more pointe than anyone n celtic history, and if there were 3 pointers back then,he would have scored close to 30,000 points. He was a clutch end of game shooter, played at a very high level for 16 years. He was too quick for the nba forwards, and too strong for the guards to handle. If they had kept assist and steals records all the years he played he would have probaby recorded more steals than anyone, and more assists than almost anyone.I believe he had over 5000 rebounds in his career to,at 6 foot 5 inches tall.He had 8 championship rings. He as the real deal who often ran full power for 48 minutes,he ran people ragged with perpetual motion. He could shoot and dribble equally well with either hand, and he had a deadly 12 foot jumper.I saw him play several games with a broken bone in his leg.No one in todays nba is on his level except kobe bryant. He was not better than michael jordan, but he would certainly have given jordan alot of trouble on some nights.I saw havlicek outplay walt frazier, jerry west, and oscar robertson on several occasions. He was the real deal! The modern day swingman like ginoblli, pippen,or guys like this were not even close to his level.

Ill list some really great but underrated players over the years.Gus williams, john lucas, jerry sloan, bob weiss, butch beard, scott skiles, bob dandridge, marques johnson, norm van lier, bob love, bernard king, chet walker, bingo smith, dick snyder, fred brown, don nelson, bill bradley, and jon mcglocklin...look them up.Two real tall guys who looked really weird ,but could shoot the rock really well were paul mokeski and hank finkel.Finkel hit two shots from the top of the key over jabbar to help boston in that campionsip series in the early 70s,and he scored over 50 points against my buffalo braves with a soft left handed hook shot.

There are film clips all over the place of that awesome long several overtime playoff game against the suns in 1976 where havlicek hit what he thought was the game winner, then gar heard hit his shot.Havlicek was essentially playing with a broken bone in his leg,and he was well into his late thirties by then.He was really good.I saw him play with a slightly seperated right shoulder in the playoffs one year against the knicks. He shot and dribbled with his off hand, the left all game, and still had 26 points or so.He should have won the mvp in 1974 and 1970,he was the best player alive during those seasons.Only abdul jabbar was as consistantly effective as havlicek in the 1970s.

Larry bird is comparable to havlicek in talent and results in their careers. Both had uncanny court sense or basketball i.q.While neither were pure shooters, both were prolific scorers.Havlicek moved better without the ball and was a much better defender than bird.Bird was a better passer and rebounder.Bird was about 4 inches taller.

Its just like the great red auerbach said.IF you take wilt chamberlain, bill russell, kareem abdul jabbar at center.Larry bird, julius erving, bob pettit, dolph schayes, and elgin baylor at foreward, and michael jordan, bob cousy, magic johnson, jarry west, and oscar robertson at guard, and add john havlicek as a swingman. And put them all on one 14 man squad...no one else would ever beat them in a series.Ever!Sure there are alot of other great players in all eras, but who would beat them?No one!

I think it was in 1971 the Celts lost to the Knicks and Havlicek was playing with as bad a shoulder injury as you can play with. He still played great basketball. He had some key hoops in the triple overtime game against Phoenix www.youtube.com/watch?v=htWUnrdLX2Q and who can forget "Havlicek stole the ball." Sometimes past legends get lost in our dimension of today.
