Johan Santana Unhappy In Minnesota

14

by Cknight5

Johan Santana showed his anger on Wednesday about the trade deadline.  He is very unhappy with how the Minnesota Twins organization handles the deadline.  They failed to get anyone other than two prospects, and to get that they had to give up Luis Castillo, their lead-off man who bats over .300, to the Mets.  Johan was quoted  saying the following:

"It's not just about hope.  In a realistic world, you have to really make it happen and go for it.  You always talk about future, future. ... But if you only worry about the future, then I guess a lot of us won't be part of it.  Why waste time when you're talking about something that's always going to be like that? It's never going to be beyond this point.  It doesn't make any sense for me to be here, you know?"

This season, Johan Santana is 11-8 and has 156 strikeouts.  His ERA is currently at 2.92. Santana could be a free agent after the '08 season, and it seems as though unless Minnesota can do something to make him want to stay in town he could likely be on his way out.

I love the run that this Twins team has had in recent years, but sadly, I think they've peaked and will begin to decline before long. With Liriano hurt, the potential for drastic improvement is not really there. Without any big names coming in before the deadline and Torii Hunter likely to leave after the season, their chances of keeping Johan don't look good.

I think the other team in New York will disagree...

Hmm....

Santana, Sabathia, Wang, Petitte, Hughes...that's a pretty good rotation...and don't act like it isn't a distinct possibility (unless sabathia was already resign, i don't think he has, but i could be wrong)

It would take an awful lot of money (even for the Yankees) to sign Santana and Sabathia...they'll each get probably $20+ million a year, for a decent length of time...

Santana is exactly what we need on The Yankess. A guy that is all about business and winning and less about what is in it for himself down the road

He is too young for the Yankees, they only trade for pitchers 35 and over ;)

Johan - you've been in the Twinkies organization how long now and you're just now coming to the conclusion that management is tight?

Johan certainly has the stuff to be big in a big market. He'd probably more appreciated elsewhere. Hey, maybe he can join his unhappy Minnesota buddy KG in Boston! If that happened, I'd probably die.

The Twins actually have enough pieces in that rotation that losing Santana wouldn't hurt them a ton...obviously, you never want to lose the best pitcher in baseball, but they could still have a rotation of Liriano, Garza, Bonser, Slowey, and Baker in two years, plus anybody else they have in the system. I'd use the Santana money to extend Mauer, look into extending Morneau, and acquire some actual big-league talent at 3B/DH/OF.

About his quote: Hey, look at Tony Gwynn and Cal Jr. Two of the best players to ever play the game. They never won a World Series because they had faith in their respective teams. They didn't have much money. I'm sure they would have loved to win a World Series, but to say that it makes "no sense" to be here, that's just wrong. Your career started in Minnesota, and you've got a good team. They're just not gonna catch up and he's lost faith in his team. If he wants to go to a winning team, maybe he forgot that he has the reigning MVP on his team, and one of the best young pitchers in the MLB coming back next year, and he is none other than Francisco Liriano. And then you got guys like Torii Hunter, Joe Mauer...you know? No reason to be there? I can't believe he said that.

Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken were the best players on their teams for large periods of time...on top of that they were also highly compensated on those teams...Gwynn's teams went to the world series twice (84 and 98 I believe) and Cal actually won the world series in 1983 (and won MVP)...he also probably should have gone in 1996, but some dumb kid grabbed a ball and y'know ; - )

Being a Twins fan, I only want the best for Santana. He is far far better than most people realize. I believe a frist ballot Hall of Famer. Wherever he goes, I hope they win it. His only negative is that he keeps telling the manager (Gardy) that he can hit and he would only hit about .250
