Joey Mattern (Joseph Peter Mattern) was born on September 9, 1892. Mattern attended Lehigh University and the University of Minnesota. Mattern made his professional debut in the APFA in 1920 with the Cleveland Tigers. He played in the APFA for 1 year, playing for the Cleveland Tigers the entire time. Mattern also played in the NFL for 1 year, playing for the Minneapolis Marines the entire time.
