Joe Start (Joseph Start) was born on October 14, 1842 in New York, New York. He made his Major League debut on May 18, 1871 for the New York Mutuals. In 1871, his rookie year, he hit .360 with 1 home run and 34 RBI. Start played for the New York Mutuals, Hartford Dark Blues, Chicago White Stockings, Providence Grays and Washington Senators over the course of his 16 year career.

Most people believe that Joe Start's best season was 1883, when he hit for a .284 average and knocked in 57 runs.
