Joe Schmidt (Joseph Paul Schmidt) was born on January 19, 1932 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After going to high school at Brentwood (Pittsburgh, PA), Schmidt attended the University of Pittsburgh. Schmidt made his professional debut in the NFL in 1953 with the Detroit Lions. He played for the Detroit Lions for his entire 13 year career.

Most people believe that 1958 was Joe Schmidt's best year, as he picked off 6 passes.
