Born on June 28, 1952 in Brooklyn, New York, Joe Sambito (Joseph Charles Sambito) played for the Houston Astros, New York Mets and Boston Red Sox over the course of his 11 year career. Sambito broke into the bigs on July 20, 1976 with the Houston Astros, and put up a 3.54 ERA in 53.1 innings pitched in 1976, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Joe Sambito's best season was 1979, when he posted a 1.77 ERA, notched 22 saves and struck out 83 batters.
