Joe Gillis (Joseph Augustius Gillis) was born on April 24, 1896 in Medford, Massachusetts. After going to high school at Medford (MA), Gillis attended Tufts University and the University of Detroit Mercy. Gillis made his professional debut in the NFL in 1923 with the Toledo Maroons. He played for the Toledo Maroons for his entire 1 year career.
