Joe D Overrated!?!?!?!

6
Vote

by user Dukeboy999

Upon seeing this insane quote from Manny I had to do an article. Especially after taking so much heat for saying David Ortiz was overrated. Joe D is a legend and deserves some backing up here. First heres the comment Manny had:

"Here comes the can of worms...

Joe DiMaggio is overrated. It needs to be realized finally. He's the Derek Jeter of his time. Hitting streaks are overrated and he couldn't even keep Marilyn a whole year. He was OVER RATED like none other. I'm not saying he wasn't popular, but history did him favors; he wasn't as GREAT as y'all want to believe. Ted Williams was 10 times the player "Joltin' Joe" ever dreamed of being..."

Ok at least Manny knows that hes saying something that is unAmerican. First off hitting streaks do matter. It is one of the greatest records in baseball. With the modern media and the pressure they put on players, this streak may never be broken. So lets give the man some credit where credit is due. Joe Dimaggio had a career .325 average with only 369 career strikeouts in 6821 at bats. For a non power hitter he had 361 career home runs and slugged .579. He also had 389 career doubles to go along with 131 triples. This guy was one of the faces of the Yankees in his era and of all time. Please do not disrespect people who were part of an era as well as in the Hall of Fame with stats to back it up. This was a great man and ballplayer.

i'm saying that what you wrote was backed up with stats, and i respect that. the article seems rushed to me, like you could have organized it better. maybe it is better suited for a showdown with manny, with the topic being something along the lines of whether or not joe d deserves the label as overrated.

I would like to see a showdown so this can be debated once and for all. But please proofread your article before finishing, Dukeboy999.

Manny made a comment about Ted Williams being better than Joe D. I'm simply agreeing with that comment. Ted Williams WAS a better ballplayer than Joe D.

Give me Ted Williams any day. The guy was in two wars and still put up career numbers far better than DiMaggio.

Actually my dear boy, I am 1 for 1 (that's 100% in case your math skills are as questionable as your writing skills). I don't really write that many. I more prefer reading them (well, usually) Don't worry though, I won't read, vote for, or comment on any of your "articles" anymore. I'll stick with the good writes on this site (there are several)

DiMaggio also did not play from the age of 28-30. So he missed his prime years.

wait, wait, wait... I know what I say is un-American, but Yes, Joe D was over-loved - songs written about him, not song, but plural - songs. Come on, he married Marilyn Monroe! PLEASE, she is the FIRST sexy babe ang still to this day exudes the ultimate of sexiness... Joe D lost her in 9 months!

Baseball wise- Joe D was SLOW, dude...look at the numbers that indicate speed... you're a number guy, what do the numbers tell you? that this was a guy who could own centerfield? hardly... the Derek Jeter of his generation!

DiMaggio batted .408 during his 56 game hit streak in 1941, BIG WHOOP! Ted Williams batted .406 FOR THE SEASON! Yet who do we remember in song? 'nuff said clearly OVER RATED!

again, I'm not saying DiMaggio's not a worthy Hall of Famer... there's manny dudes that were WAY better than him, that's all... stop OVER-loving this dude... if Ted Kluszewski can better your stats, are you REALLY that great?

Please note: No One mentioned his name in 'greatest hitter' discussion either.. so, clearly, Joe D's O!F is low...

Streaks in general are WAY over-rated... in ANY world would you take Cal Ripken over Lou Gehrig?

First of all, Joe D. only played over 140 games FIVE TIMES! Much too short of a career to even be considered among the greatest of all time. Ted Williams was better, so were Musial, Mays, Mantle, Aaron. And his 56 game record? Nice, but really doesn't mean much over the course of one's career.

Here's what came up when I entered Joe D. into Baseball-Reference.com as "Similar Hitters" -

Larry Walker (870) Chuck Klein (849) * Johnny Mize (848) * Duke Snider (829) * Earl Averill (825) * Manny Ramirez (818) Ellis Burks (813) Bob Johnson (811) Jim Rice (807) Juan Gonzalez (797)

Not exactly Murderer's Row! Try entering Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and see what kind of list you get! Face it, Joe D. was a very good player, but one of the greatest of all time? Hardly.

Idiots. Mantle was nowhere near as good a hitter.

Williams and Cobb called him the greatest player of his era.

He playedi in a horrible hitters park for RH's.

And check it out:

SLG:

DiMaggio: .579 Mic: .557

BA: BA:

.325 .298

And DiMaggio averaged a homer every 18.2 ab's. That's better than Musial, who averaged one every 23.10 ab's.

So don't talk crap when you don't know what the hell youre talking about.

The only reason the 'best hitters' comparison wasn't as good is because he missed three years of his prime. At the time of his retirement, he was 5th on the list of hr. hitters.

When a guy like Musial, Feller or Williams calls him the greatest, you listen.

He played in a ballpark that was 487 and 461 to LF. and CF.

And he was the greatest defensive CF of his time.

His 162 Game average:

.325, 34, 143.

Not bad for someone who's overrated.

And don't insult Johhny Mize, Chuck Klein and Ramirez, they're all fantastic hitters.

You know nothing about baseball.
