Joe Alexander (Joseph A. Alexander) was born on April 1, 1898 in Silver Creek, New York. After going to high school at Central (Syracuse, NY), Alexander attended Syracuse University. Alexander made his professional debut in the APFA in 1921 with the Syracuse Pros. He played in the APFA for 1 year, playing for the Syracuse Pros the entire time. Alexander also played in the NFL for 5 years, playing for the New York Giants and Rochester Jeffersons over the course of his 5 year NFL career.

Most people believe that 1926 was Joe Alexander's best year, as he ran back a fumble for a touchdown.
