Jimmy Van Dyke (James B. Van Dyke) was born on October 2, 1898 in Louisville, Kentucky. After going to high school at Male (Louisville, KY), Van Dyke attended none. Van Dyke made his professional debut in the APFA in 1921 with the Louisville Brecks. He played in the APFA for 1 year, playing for the Louisville Brecks the entire time. Van Dyke also played in the NFL for 2 years, playing for the Louisville Brecks the entire time.
