Jimmy McAleer (James Robert McAleer) was born on July 10, 1864 in Youngstown, Ohio. He made his Major League debut on April 24, 1889 for the Cleveland Spiders. In 1889, his rookie year, he hit .235 with 1 home run and 35 RBI. McAleer played for the Cleveland Spiders, Cleveland Infants, Cleveland Blues and St. Louis Browns over the course of his 12 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Jimmy McAleer's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1892, when he stole 40 bases and knocked in 70 runs. However, others believe that it was 1891, when he stole 51 bases and knocked in 61 runs.

McAleer went on to become owner of the Boston Red Sox for two years (1912-1913). He was the head owner when the Sox moved into Fenway Park.
