Born on November 10, 1857 in Conklin, New York, Jim Whitney (James Evans Whitney) played for the Boston Red Caps, Boston Beaneaters, Kansas City Cowboys, Washington Senators, Indianapolis Hoosiers and Philadelphia Athletics over the course of his 10 year career. Whitney broke into the bigs on May 2, 1881 with the Boston Red Caps, and put up a 2.48 ERA in 552.1 innings pitched in 1881, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Jim Whitney's best season was 1883, when he posted a 2.24 ERA, won 37 games and struck out 345 batters.
