Jim Tyrer (James Efflo Tyrer) was born on February 25, 1939 in Newark, Ohio. After going to high school at Newark (OH), Tyrer attended Ohio State University. Tyrer made his professional debut in the AFL in 1961 with the Dallas Texans. He played in the AFL for 9 years, playing for the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Texans over the course of his 9 year AFL career.Tyrer also played in the NFL for 5 years, playing for the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins over the course of his 5 year NFL career.

Most people believe that 1967 was Jim Tyrer's best year.
