Jim Russell (James William Russell) was born on October 1, 1918 in Fayette City, Pennsylvania. He made his Major League debut on September 12, 1942 for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1943, his rookie year, he hit .259 with 4 home runs and 44 RBI. Russell played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Braves and Brooklyn Dodgers over the course of his 10 year career.
There is some disagreement on what was Jim Russell's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1944, when he hit for a .312 average and knocked in 66 runs. However, others believe that it was 1945, when he hit for a .284 average and knocked in 77 runs.
