Born on August 10, 1916 in Lima, Ohio, Jim Mertz (James Verlin Mertz) played for the Washington Senators for his entire 1 year career. Mertz broke into the bigs on May 1, 1943 with the Washington Senators, and put up a 4.63 ERA in 116.2 innings pitched in 1943, his rookie year.
