Jim Mertens (James Frederick Mertens) was born on May 25, 1947 in Cumberland, Maryland. After going to high school at Fort Hill (Cumberland, MD), Mertens attended Fairmont State. Mertens made his professional debut in the AFL in 1969 with the Miami Dolphins. He played for the Miami Dolphins for his entire 1 year career.
