[edit] Biography

James Robert Lemon entered the major leagues through the Cleveland Indians, when that organization signed him as a free agent in 1948. He played for the Indians for two seasons (1950 & 1953) before having his contract purchased by the Washington Senators in 1954. Lemon played for the Senators franchise for most of the rest of his career (1954-1963), though the organization moved to Minnesota in 1961 and started to call themselves the Minnesota Twins. In his last year, 1963, Lemon played for three different teams, the Twins (7 games), the Philadelphia Phillies (31 games) and the Chicago White Sox (36 games). In the last year that the Senators operated out of Washington, Lemon was named an All-Star, the only year he was an All-Star. Lemon lead the league in triples, with 11, in 1956, in sac. flies, with 9, in 1960, and lead the league in strike-outs in 1956-1958 (138, 94, 120).

Jim Lemon returned to baseball in Washington, D.C. in 1968. At the age of 40, Lemon managed the Washington Senators (the one that existed from 1961-1971 before moving to Texas to become the Rangers). The team finished in last place in the American League with a record of 65-96. That was Lemon's only major league level managing job.

There is some disagreement on what was Jim Lemon's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1960, when he slugged 38 home runs and knocked in 100 runs. However, others believe that it was 1959, when he slugged 33 home runs, hit for a .279 average and knocked in 100 runs.
