Born on August 4, 1932 in Farnham, Virginia, Jim Coates (James Alton Coates) played for the New York Yankees, Washington Senators, Cincinnati Reds and California Angels over the course of his 9 year career. Coates broke into the bigs on September 21, 1956 with the New York Yankees, and put up a 2.87 ERA in 100.1 innings pitched in 1959, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Jim Coates's best season was 1961, when he posted a 3.44 ERA, won 11 games and struck out 80 batters.
